Best Practice on Reducing the Amount of Fishing Gear Littering the NE Atlantic

OSPAR has published a scoping study on best practices for the design and recycling of fishing
gear as a means to reduce quantities of fishing gear found as marine litter in the North East Atlantic.

Both unintentional and intentional loss of fishing gear at sea result in marine litter and negative environmental impacts. The study sets out the current understanding of the challenges and barriers, the potential solutions and some best practice examples for the design and recycling of fishing gear. The study findings come from a questionnaire sent out to fishing sector stakeholders and expert interviews, culminating in an expert workshop to discuss preliminary conclusions which was organised with the European Commission in the context of the implementation
of the EU Directive on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment
(EU/2019/904).
