North West Coastal Access Updates and Cultural Value of the Cumbrian Coast Survey

Natural England have produced their August update on progress in developing the English Coast Path on the North West’s coast. There is a lot more detail in this month’s update but a brief summary of status of each section is:

  • Stretch 1: Allonby to Whitehaven – OPEN
  • Stretch 2: Whitehaven to Silecroft (51 km) – STAGE 5: ‘OPEN’
  • Stretch 3: Gretna to Allonby (98 km) – STAGE 4: ‘DETERMINE’
  • Stretch 4: Walney Island (33km) – STAGE 5: ‘OPEN’
  • Stretch 5: Silecroft to Silverdale (approx. 101km) – STAGE 2: ‘DEVELOP’
  • Stretch 6: Silverdale to Cleveleys (approx. 82km) – STAGE 2: ‘DEVELOP’
  • Stretch 7: Cleveleys to Pier head, Liverpool (approx. 124km) – STAGE 2: ‘DEVELOP’
  • Stretch 8: Birkenhead to Welsh border (approx. 41km) – ) – STAGE 2: ‘DEVELOP

The Natural England North West Coastal Access team has also linked up with a Dublin University project looking at the cultural values of coastlines. The university has set up a survey and the data from this will be used to create a report to provide evidence of cultural ecosystem services and help to inform policy and decision makers re the value and management of coastal areas.
