DONG energy are to invest a total of £5.4 billion in regional offshore wind farms by 2019. DONG energy currently invest £2.7 billion across four currently operational wind farms including Barrow, Walney, Burbo Bank and West of Duddon Sands in the Irish Sea. A further £2.7 billion is expected to be invested in two extension schemes, Burbo Bank Extension and the 660 megawatt Walney Extension, the latter of which will surpass the London Array as the world’s biggest offshore wind farm. The investment in offshore wind energy is expected to deliver significant economic benefits in the north west of England, especially around the regions of Liverpool and Cumbria.
