Coastal community projects around England are to receive a share of £700,000 funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government to restore local landmarks. Fifteen projects are to receive up to £50,000 each to help rejuvenate historic buildings or cultural and social areas. It is hoped that the project will help to boost the economy in coastal areas and encourage ‘staycations’.
Amongst the fifteen projects are two in the North West of England, one in Cumbria and another in Lancashire. The focus of the Cumbria project is to rejuvenate the Maryport and Solway lighthouse and get it back in working order. In Lancashire, the Bay Art Park in Morecambe will be converted into an art, leisure and festival venue. Both of these projects have been granted the full £50,000 and are to be managed by the Maryport Area Coastal Community Team and the Lancashire City Council respectively.
More information regarding the grants can be found here.
