Consultation – Managing the UK Queen Scallop Fishery

Closes 3rd January 2017

This consultation is being conducted on behalf of the five UK and Isle of Man Fisheries Administrations. It seeks views on the introduction of new management measures in the queen scallop fishery in ICES divisions VIa (north coast of Northern Ireland and western Scotland) and VIIa (Irish Sea).

The purpose of this consultation is to seek the views of those with an interest in queen scallop fishing, in order to inform policy decisions regarding the future management of the fishery. Final decisions on the issues under consideration will also take account of a range of other factors, including any other available information and research evidence.

The consultation is based on proposals for management measures arising from a working group that was established to address concerns over the health of queen scallop stocks. Members of the group include fishers, processors, fisheries administrations and scientists.

The proposals include increasing the minimum size of scallop that can be retained and options for restricting access to the fishery.
