Progress on UK Tidal Energy Developments

Progress on two tidal energy developments in the UK are underway.

The application for a tidal energy centre off the Isle of Wight by Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre Ltd. has been approved by the MMO. The application for the grid-connected tidal development will include activities which relate to the construction and operational phase of the tidal energy centre which will be situated 2km offshore. The tidal energy centre is expected to have a 25 year lifespan and will export energy generated into the electricity network. More information regarding the development of the  Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre can be found here.

Components of a pioneering wave powered renewable energy technology have been tested in Pembroke Port in south west Wales. The WaveSub Wave Energy Converter (WEC), developed by Marine Power Systems (MPS) Ltd. was tested in a onshore lagoon at Pembroke Port and aims to provide a sustainable, storm proof, transportable and low cost solution to extract wave energy. More information about the project can be found here.
