Marine Week 2026 is almost here!

Running from 25th July until 9th August (to ensure everyone in the country gets to explore at the best low tides) National Marine Week 2026 is starting shortly!  In order to celebrate the best our fabulous North West Coast has to offer there are a number of exciting events for you to get involved with. With such a wide variety of activities on offer from exploring our coastal and marine nature, to prehistoric woodlands now found on our coastline, from seals to saltmarshes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy learning more about this summer. National Marine Week is a Wildlife Trusts initiative and you can find out more information and see more events across the country on their website where  you can also make a pledge for the sea.

Saltmarsh Safari, Granny’s Bay Discovery Day and more – Fylde Ranger Service

Throughout marine week, the fantastic Fylde Ranger Service are running a whole host of activities to keep the whole family occupied! Starting with a Saltmarsh Safari taking place on Monday 27th July where you can learn all about this unique habitat and how it protects our coast. There will also be Coastal Sketch Walks on the 1st August and ‘Granny’s Bay Coastal Discovery Day’ on the 6th August where you can take part in a Nature BioBlitz, learn how to make cyanotype prints and about the ‘Our Future Coasts’ project. Please be aware some activities such as the Saltmarsh Safari and Cyanotype printing require advance booking by emailing [email protected] 

Hightown Prehistoric Forest Survey – MOLA Coasts in Mind

The wonderful team at MOLA who are currently running the ‘Coasts in Mind’ project (CiM), a three year project exploring the impact of climate change on habitats and culture and heritage along our coastlines. The Sefton coast has a number of archaeological features to explore including mesolithic footprints, the remains of Britain’s first lifeboat station and more. Over marine week, the CiM Team are inviting people to come along and participate in a hands on archaeological workshop surveying the remains of a prehistoric forest! No experience is required, but you do need to be over 18 years old. Booking is required and you can sign up by visiting their site using the link above 

SeaFest, Beach Cleans, and experience of Nature in the Walney Chanel – Cumbria Wildlife Trust

Cumbria Wildlife Trust have a whole range of activities happening over the marine week period. Kicking off with SeaFest (a part of Irish Sea Day) celebrating all of the wonder the Irish Sea has to offer on the 25th July. You can drop into this event, but to get involved with some activities, such as making your own cyanotype artwork or participating in the much looked forward to Annual Sandcastle Competition booking is required by emailing [email protected] 

If getting stuck in and making our coastline the best it can be, you can join one of the teams frequently organised beach clean events, such as one on the 26th June at Biggar Bank. You can book online to attend via the website, all equipment is provided and their are prizes to be won!

To learn more about nature and history, the “past, present and future of Walneys coastal story” event, with the team and an archaeologist will allow you to share your memories and learn more about the restoration work that has been taking place.
