Five Proposed Joint UK Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) for Pelagic Stocks

The Scottish Government is currently consulting on 5 Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) for pelagic fish stocks. This is a joint consultation between the Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and UK governments and covers:

• North Sea herring
• West Coast of Scotland and Clyde herring
• Atlanto-Scandian herring
• Northern Shelf mackerel
• Northern Shelf blue whiting

The 5 FMPs have been developed jointly by UK fisheries authorities (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, Scottish Government, Welsh Government and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland) , with input from industry, scientists, NGOs and Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies.

The UK fisheries authorities will between them prepare and publish 43 Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) by 2028. FMPs arise from the Fisheries Act 2020 and set out how fisheries will be managed to ensure sustainability.
