The King Charles III England Coast Path (KCIIIECP) continues to expand across the North West region. Once completed, it will be the longest managed coastal walking route in the world. The path grants the public a legal right of access to the coastline, including its associated blue and green spaces.
Newly Opened Sections (as of May 2025)
Birkenhead to Welsh Border (Wirral): In January 2025, an 8.8 mile (14.1 km) stretch opened connecting Birkenhead to the Welsh border near Burton Point. This section connects to existing KCIIIIEP sections northwards to the ferry across the Mersey and southwards beyond to the Welsh border, from where a link path allows you to continue south along the Wales Coast Path.
Currently Open Sections in the North West includes:
- Gretna to Kirkandrews-on-Eden
- Brownrigg to Allonby
- Allonby to Whitehaven
- Whitehaven to Silecroft
- Silecroft to Green Road
- Walney Island
- Tarleton Lock (near Preston) to Pier Head Ferry Terminal, Liverpool
- Birkenhead to Welsh Border
Sites Under Development:
- Silecroft to Silverdale: Work is ongoing to complete this stretch, which will further enhance access along the Cumbria coast.
- Silverdale to Cleveleys: This segment is in progress, aiming to connect more communities along the Lancashire coastline.
- Cleveleys to Pier Head, Liverpool: Development is underway to link these areas, providing a continuous path through key urban and coastal landscapes.
