Policy Paper: Progress in improving the natural environment in England 2023 to 2024

The Office for Environmental Protection has published a report that assesses the government’s progress towards the environmental targets. These are legally-binding targets. The report also assesses the goals of its Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) which aims to restore nature and improve environmental quality.

This progress report covers the period 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.

The report includes chapters on:

  • Thriving plants and wildlife
  • Clean air
  • Clean and plentiful water
  • Managing exposure to chemical and pesticides
  • Maximise our resources, minimise our waste
  • Using resources from nature sustainably
  • Mitigating and adapting to climate change
  • Reduced risk of harm from environmental hazards
  • Enhancing biosecurity
  • Enhancing beauty, heritage and engagement with the natural environment
  • EIP23 cross-cutting themes

Alongside these chapters, the report provides an in-depth assessment of improving nature and taking stock of the above themes.
