Coastal Access Updates

Natural England has published a December 2017 update on progress on the England Coast Path in the North West. The coast from Silecroft to the Welsh border on the Dee Estuary is described as ‘proposals in development’ but only one stretch of the coast – a 36km stretch from Allonby to Whitehaven is fully open, with other stretches requiring route realignment, establishment works and other issues resolving before they can be fully implemented. Importantly liaison work has started at the southern end over links to the Welsh Coast Path. The North West section of the England Coast Path is unique in that it is separated from the rest of England by Wales and Scotland so links with long distance coastal routes in bordering countries is critical in maintaining the ambition of a continuous path around our coastline.
