Closed – Bathing Water season length consultation

Defra has launched a consultation on the length of the bathing water season in England. The Bathing Water Directive (76/160/EEC, revised by 2006/7/EC) sets standards for bathing water quality on designated bathing beaches (freshwater or marine) across Europe. Bathing waters are monitored during the bathing season for compliance with these standards but the Directive does not set out a minimum or maximum length for the bathing season. In England the season runs from 15 May to 30 September but this could be amended to shorten or lengthen the bathing season nationally, or be set on a regional or local basis.

Depending on the outcome of the survey, an Impact Assessment will be prepared and a detailed consultation will be carried out during the winter of 2013/14.  A final decision would be based on evidence of the patterns of usage at bathing waters in different areas or at individual bathing waters.

For more information and to take part in the survey, which closes on 30th September, visit the consultation web page.
