North West Shipyard Wins Wind Farm Contract

The Birkenhead-based shipyard Cammell Laird has won a £5m contract with energy group RWE to provide port facilities for the 160-turbine Gwynt y Môr windfarm off the coast of North Wales. The deal gives the company a foothold in the rapidly expanding offshore renewables market and means that Cammell Laird will be in a strong position to bid for further contracts as the round 3 windfarm projects in the Irish Sea begin to roll out, with the potential to create many more jobs at the company.

The company has also announced that, in partnership with Italian company Ansaldo Nucleare and Warrington-based Nueva, it intends to bid for the contract to build the UK’s next generation of nuclear power plants. If the bidding process, which starts early next year, were to be successful, it would secure hundreds of jobs in the North West.
